Enabling Airborne Platforms Including Civil, Military, and Unmanned Systems

With over 30 continuous years of heritage serving commercial and military avionics applications, AMD offers Commercial-grade and Defense-grade FPGA and SoC devices, a full range of IP cores, advanced tool flow support, industry-leading SEU solutions, and superior device reliability. AMD has established use in certified platforms, and now offers an MCFA data package to address avionics certification of the multi-core processing system within the AMD Zynq™ UltraScale+™ MPSOC device.

Through collaboration with technology leaders, industry experts, and the user community, AMD offers a comprehensive ecosystem of DO-254 and DO-178 certification solutions and expertise, providing developers with the practical guidance and certification support to help reduce the cost, risk, and time to market of next-generation avionics. Refer to the Overview, Ecosystem, and Resources tabs on this page for more detail on addressing DO-254 and DO-178 for commercial and defense systems.

Avionics Functional Safety

The Avionics, Automotive, Industrial, and Medical industries share a common base of certification requirements that aim to address safety and reliability in the development of critical systems. Complementing investment in reliability and quality initiatives, AMD has invested in Functional Safety certification for industrial and automotive applications requiring compliance with IEC 61508 and ISO 26262. AMD has received functional safety certification for select tool chains and devices as well as Isolation Design Flow (IDF). Functional safety initiatives supported by AMD for industrial and automotive applications can be used to complement AMD devices in certified avionics solutions.

Complementary Market Support

Refer back to the main A&D page for Defense-grade XQ Ruggedized device needs and for guidance to get started developing on AMD. Specific solutions for Milcom & Satcom as well as Radar may be of additional interest for avionics applications.

As functional safety solutions can assist in avionics certification, industrial motor control, and automotive camera-based driver assist solutions can complement avionics applications development. For additional information on functional safety and common applications, visit our Industrial and Automotive application pages.

Applications

UAV / Drone and Other Applications Support

AMD and Topic Embedded collaborated to bring to market a UAV and Robotics Platform (URP) which enables a full host of capabilities required in such applications. The URP is built on the AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSOC ZU7EV or Zynq UltraScale+ ZU5EV device. The expansive feature set is offered in a compact single board. This platform is fully software programmable, delivered with the core infrastructure of embedded software and drivers and programmable logic IP platform.

Mission Computers

As future airborne mission computer requirements demand increased computing and networking capabilities, the requirements for safety and security continue to be pillars of avionics. AMD meets the security and safety needs from the efficient Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC to the high performing AMD Versal™ Series Gen 2 devices. AMD continues its legacy in product leadership, with the AMD Versal Prime Series Gen 2 devices expected to  offer up to a 10x leap in scalar compute over prior generation devices while offering next generation safety and security features which support mixed criticality and isolation.1

Displays and Visualization

Driving 4K60 displays becomes reality with AMD Versal Series Gen 2 adaptive SoC devices. These devices support safety-critical display applications and is capable of separate hard partitions or lock-step modes. Combine partitions to help maximize performance or enable multi-context support. Unlock more potential when pre-processing camera inputs via dedicated Image Signal Processors (ISPs) or servicing 4K video compression needs with the Video Codec Unit (VCU).

Footnotes
  1. Based on the projected combined total DMIPs of the Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 and Versal Prime Series Gen 2 processing systems when configured with 8 Arm Cortex-A78AE applications cores @ 2.2 GHz & 10 Arm Cortex-R52 Real-time cores @ 1.05 GHz, compared to the published combined total DMIPs of the processing systems in the first generation Versal AI Edge Series and Versal Prime Series. Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 and Prime Series Gen 2 operating conditions: highest available speed grade, 0.88V PS operating voltage, split-mode operation, maximum supported operating frequency. First generation Versal AI Edge Series and Prime Series operation conditions: highest available speed grade, 0.88V PS operating voltage, maximum supported operating frequency. Actual DMIPs performance will vary when final products are released in market.
